Emmett Roane – 27 year old boxer 5'8" 173 lb. middle weight. Ex Army
Anna – Emmett's deceased girlfriend – died one yr. ago.
Maude Mabel – Emmett's new girlfriend he met in Newport R. I.
Luther Irvin – evil antagonist.
The story opens in 1927with Emmett getting beat to a pulp in a boxing ring by a bozo loser. Emmett's mind is on his dead girlfriend who died of pneumonia a year ago. Eventually he rises from the mat and dispatches the bozo. His career is on the skids, he drinks too much gin and is unpleasant to be around.
His friend and manager convinces Emmett to take time off and drive to Newport R.I. to relax and get his mind straight. In the Hermann Hotel's speakeasy he meets Maude Mable and suddenly has feelings he hadn't experienced since the love of his life, Anna, died. They hit it off and share several heart felt moments.
Emmett is a rough guy with a wise mouth. He quickly runs afoul of the local mobster, Luther Irvin and from there his weekend goes down hill with murder and mayhem.
The action is fast and furious, but Emmett is a match for the bad guys.
I enjoyed the book and look forward to more by E.S. Ready.
The editing is fair, too many missing and extra words. There are also several misspelled and wrong words.
Sentence structure is okay to good.
Character Development is okay to good.
Details are enough to carry the story, but not excessive.
The plot is fast paced and intense.
The writing style is crisp with a touch of noir.
